Greek shipping magnate George Vardinogiannis, widely known as ‘The Captain’, has died aged 90. He passed away today after spending several days in hospital.

George Vardinogiannis was born in 1936 in Episkopi, Rethymno, and was one of the ten children of Giannis Vardinogiannis and Chrysi Theodoroulaki. The Vardinogiannis family has deep roots in Crete, originating from Sfakia and Rethymno, while several of George Vardinogiannis’s siblings went on to establish prominent careers in politics, shipping and business.

Vardinogiannis took a different path from several of his siblings, choosing a career in the merchant navy. He studied at the Southampton School of Merchant Marine Officers in England and subsequently pursued a professional career in shipping.

The nickname ‘The Captain’, by which he became widely known, was associated with his maritime activities. According to a widely recounted story, he earned the nickname after managing to break the embargo imposed on Rhodesia, present-day Zimbabwe, during a period of intense political and military tension.

He also played an active role in the institutional bodies representing Greek shipping and served two terms as a member of the board of the Union of Greek Shipowners.

George Vardinogiannis’s name became most closely associated with Panathinaikos and one of the most significant periods in the history of the club’s football department.

On 17 July 1979, the Vardinogiannis family acquired a majority stake in Panathinaikos Football Club, and George Vardinogiannis took over as the club’s president. Pavlos Giannakopoulos had also expressed an interest in acquiring the club, but ownership of the football club ultimately passed to the Vardinogiannis family.

George Vardinogiannis remained president of Panathinaikos for almost 21 years, from July 1979 until May 2000, marking one of the longest tenures in Greek football administration.

During his presidency, Panathinaikos won six league titles, nine Greek Cups and three Greek Super Cups, while also enjoying some of the most impressive European campaigns in the club’s history.

The team reached the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition on two occasions. In the 1984–85 season, Panathinaikos were eliminated by Liverpool in the European Cup semi-finals. In the 1995–96 season, they reached the last four of the Champions League once again, only to be eliminated by Ajax.

During his tenure, some of the most important players in the club’s history wore the Panathinaikos shirt, including Dimitris Saravakos, Juan Ramón Rocha, Velimir Zajec, Stratos Apostolakis, Juan José Borrelli and Krzysztof Warzycha. He also worked with managers such as Jacek Gmoch and Ivica Osim.

His relationship with Panathinaikos supporters went through several distinct phases. At certain times, he enjoyed widespread support and was acclaimed for the team’s successes. At others, he found himself at the centre of intense criticism over his decisions as president and the club’s performances.

Despite the controversies that periodically marked his tenure, George Vardinogiannis’s time at Panathinaikos became synonymous with an era of significant domestic success and major European achievements, leaving a lasting mark on the history of the club and Greek football as a whole.
