Twitter issues a transparency report every six months to record the amount of government requests it receives during that period, and how the company responds to them. For the first six months of 2015 Turkey leads the rest of the world with the most requests to twitter for censorship. Over 70 per cent of government takedowns came from Turkish authorities in 2015. This breaks down in 408 court orders and 310 requests from the Turkish government to remove content ‘based on violations of personal rights and other local laws’. Turkey’s request are a whopping 10 times more than second placed Russia, which issued 68 official requests and zero court orders. Turkey has retained this dishonourable first since the beginning of 2014.
