Albania – Beleris Trial: Prosecutor proposes a 2.5-year prison sentence

Beleris speaks of political persecution – The trial continues on February 28th

On Wednesday (28/2), the trial of Freddy Beleri will continue in the special court with the defense lawyers’ plea for the accused.

During the hearing, the two prosecutors found the elected mayor of Himara, Freddy Beleri, guilty of the crime of active corruption, proposing a sentence of 2 years and 6 months in prison, according to ERT.

For the co-defendant Pantelis Kokavesis, the prosecution proposed a sentence of one year in prison with a suspended sentence due to health problems.

Addressing the judges, Freddy Beleris said:

“I have complaints about how the prosecution works, constantly rejecting my evidence and not interrogating the individuals we have indicated as witnesses.

In my case, forgery of evidence has occurred.

Whoever forged documents of the Albanian state bears criminal responsibility.

Here in Albania, we do not have impartial justice because the process is politically motivated, and we see the Prime Minister intervening in this case, leaving the people of Himara without their mayor.

This is a political persecution, and you do not allow me to swear in as mayor.”
