Albania: Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Tirana demanding PM Rama’s resignation

Albanian opposition protesters threw Molotov cocktails and stones at government building – Rama was on a official visit to Turkey

Thousands of Albanians took to the streets of Tirana since yesterday protesting and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the French Agency reported.

Moreover, some of the demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails bombs and stones at government buildings in the Albanian capital, which were guarded by a police cordon, without causing injuries or serious damage.

At the same time, Rama yesterday was on an official visit to Turkey, where he was meeting with Erdogan.

“With this rally, we wanted to show Edi Rama that the opposition is united, aiming to remove the man who has been the country’s Prime Minister since 2013”, said Flamur Noka, the general secretary of the opposition Democratic Party (PD).

The demonstration took place on the 33rd anniversary of the fall of the communist regime in Albania.

The opposition leader and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha addressed the rally via video call from his home, where he has been under house arrest since late December.

“Today we started our fight to remove the dictatorship of Edi Rama, who poses a real danger”, said Berisha, accusing the current head of government of corruption and a “political attack” against his family.
