Alexis Tsipras asks that Gerry Adams be released

In a statement of his as a candidate for president of the European Commission

In a written statement published on the official website of his candidacy for the presidency of the European Commission, Alexis Tsipras asks for the release of Gerry Adams, leader of Sinn Fein, who is held by Irish authorities as suspect to the murder of a woman in 1972.

“The arrest and detention of Gerry Adams (…) is a politically incendiary move against democracy”, stated the candidate of the European left and continued: “But he is not alone. Despite the support of the Greek people, he has the support of every citizen in a democratic Europe”.

The declaration of Alexis Tsipras concludes: “As president of SYRIZA and candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, on behalf of the European Left, I ask for the immediate and unconditional release of Gerry Adams”.
