ALS Ice Bucket Challenge joins the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (see videos)

The ice bucket challenge has reached the Gaza strip where the ice hasn’t melted, but the water has disappeared…

The ALS campaign that has taken the world by storm has reached Israel and Palestine, showing that not even the Gaza conflict can stop the viral sensation flooding social media. The ice bucket challenge calls on people to post videos of themselves dumping buckets of ice water over their heads to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In Israel

Israeli actors, diplomats, politicians and many prominent Jews have already taken part in the challenge. Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N., Ron Prosor, joked that he usually gets a “chilly reception” at the U.N. and he challenged U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to pour ice over him after spending most of his time “trying to break the ice between countries.” Israeli P.R. guru Rani Rahav nominated both Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, but neither of them have so far obliged.

In Palestine

Not to be outdone, Palestinians have added their own special twist to the challenge that is doing the rounds on social media. Palestinian journalist Ayman Aloul started the trend of pouring sand and rubble over his head.

In another video, a man says, “I heard about the ALS campaign, I support it and for that reason I’m taking this challenge.” Unfortunately, no water pours from his backet. “Whoops,” he says. “In Palestine, we live under occupation. The Israeli occupation is using all the Palestinian water resources. Israeli settlers are using seven times more than Palestinians per day. In the last month hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are living, and are still living, through a water crisis. Israel targets most of the water resources and lines [facilities] in Gaza. For that, we are sorry that we can’t take part in this challenge.”

And red paint, to symbolize the bloodshed Gaza strip.
