Europe Day: Impressive illumination of the Rio-Antirrio Bridge

Use Your Vote – June 9th is the central message of the European Parliament’s campaign. The Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge was one of the iconic landmarks illuminated on the night of May 8-9

The Rio-Antirrio Bridge was illuminated in the colors of the European Union on the evening of March 8th, on the occasion of Europe Day. The Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge was selected by Greece as one of the country’s most iconic landmarks participating in the celebrations held in all EU countries, as part of an initiative by the European Parliament with the central message, One month until the European Elections – June 9, 2024.

The central message of the European Parliament’s campaign, Use Your Vote – June 9, appeared on the screens of the bridge, aiming to remind citizens to use their vote in the European elections on June 9th. The selection of the Bridge and the implementation of the action were a collaboration between the European Parliament Office in Greece, the European Investment Bank Group Office (EIB) in Greece, and the Bridge S.A.

The Rio-Antirrio Bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, completed in 2004, and it stands as a landmark of 21st-century Greece, highlighting the importance of mobility by connecting people and regions. With the completion of the project, the vision conceived over a century ago by then Greek Prime Minister Charilaos Trikoupis for bridging the narrow sea passage between Rio and Antirrio became a reality. The Arc de Triomphe, the Colosseum, among other landmarks, were illuminated to celebrate Europe Day. This initiative by the European Parliament aimed to remind citizens of the upcoming European elections on June 9, 2024. Buildings across the EU displayed the message, Use your vote, So others won’t Decide for you.. The goal is to unite 440 million Europeans and emphasize the elections’ importance for the continent’s future. May 9th, Europe Day, serves as a day of reflection and remembrance, especially as it coincides with the one-month countdown to the elections. This year’s Europe Day holds particular significance, highlighting the link between past struggles for democracy and the aspirations of future generations for a better Europe.
