May the best man win: ND leadership candidates cast their votes in election race

The four candidates see the huge turnout as a mark of success regardless of the winner

The New Democracy conservative leadership candidates showed up to vote in the main opposition party’s elections being held amid a high voter turn-up on Sunday, December 22.

Conservative main opposition New Democracy (ND) candidate Apostolos Tzitzikostas headed to the voting center at I. Vellidis conference hall of the Thessaloniki International Fair shortly before 9 a.m. on Sunday to vote in the party elections where he is one of four candidates vying for the leadership.

In statements made to journalists, Tzitzikostas said that there is a high level of participation for the elections of the conservative party from all around Greece. He underlined that “today we are turning a page at the New Democracy (party).”

“The ND supporters and friends of ND have taken the factions chances in their hands. Today we are turning a page, we are leaving behind all that hurt us, we are joining forces and moving towards a party that is open, modern, democratic,” he said. “For a party that is modern, European so that the country can get rid of the current government.”

After announcing his intent to vote on Twitter, conservative main opposition New Democracy (ND) candidate Adonis Georgiadis arrived at the Peristeri center shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday to cast his vost for the leadership elections.

Speaking to journalists, he said that from Monday “we will all be together united and strong” for the creation of a “large center-right faction” that will soon take the fate of our country in its hands.

Conservative main opposition New Democracy (ND) party leadership candidate Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived at his voting center in uptown Kifissia, north of Athens, shortly after 11 a.m. to cast his votes in the elections. Speaking to journalists he said that the friends of the party are taking its fate in their hands. He underlined that the ND needs strong impetus.

He commented on the huge voter turnout and said that this was a “day of celebration for ND” and predicted that 2016 would be a good year for the party.

The former conservative leader who had ruled the party during the September elections, spoke of a great celebration in the faction shortly before casting his vote at the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry in reference to the huge voter turnout. He underlined that “tonight there will be no winners and losers” because “the great winner will be the New Democracy” party.
