Education Minister Loverdos met with President Papoulias

Mr. Papoulias was especially interested in the education of the Muslim minority

Education Minister Andreas Loverdos on Wednesday met with President Karolos Papoulias in order to brief him on the outcome of his tour in Crete, the Dodecanese, Athos, Macedonia and Thrace.

The education minister noted that he encountered less problems than expected and reassured the President that any gaps in educational staff would be promptly covered.

Mr. Papoulias was especially interested in the education of the Muslim minority, expressing concern over the fact that the neighboring country is trying to create problems.

Mr. Loverdos stressed that the Greek-language teaching of the Koran is well-received by the minority and pledged that next year books will also be available. He also informed the President that after the opening of schools he will continue touring in Thessaly, Epirus and the rest of Greece, so that the government is up to date with the existing conditions in all primary and secondary schools.
