Ethnic Albanians in southern Serbia want autonomy

Serbia warns they are ‘playing with fire’

Albanians residing in southern Serbia are raising the issue of their administrative autonomy along the lines of the solution offered to Serbians living in the Kosovo region. Albanians are expected to make their demands public during the constituent assembly of the Union of the Albanian Municipalities to take place Saturday. As Serbian media report, the Albanian community’s demands are based on a similar arrangement adopted for the Union of Serbian Municipalities in Kosovo. The Union of Albanian Municipalities is also asking for a right to exercise executive power, a permanent national assembly , as well as the right to set up public organizations. The Albanian representatives said they had the support of Tirana and Pristina, while they plan to involve the EU institutions and the US on their demands in the near future. The Serbian Foreign Minister, Ivica Dacic warned the Albanians that they were ‘playing with fire’, by making such demands and comparing them with those of the Serbs in Kosovo.
