Farmers: Today they will decide the committee that will meet the Prime Minister next week

Government and farmers in open line - Continuous symbolic road blockades

Newsroom February 9 10:05

At 11 o’clock in the morning, a nationwide meeting of farmers is scheduled to take place in Sindos, Thessaloniki, where they will deliberate on the composition of the committee to be established and will arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

They anticipate that the committee should consist of no fewer than 20 members to ensure representation from various agricultural sectors such as fishermen, beekeepers, and others.

The national gathering in Sindos is expected to be attended by representatives from 50 blockades, who, in addition to procedural matters, will discuss the substance of the negotiations, aligning with the content outlined in their letter to Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

It is anticipated that the initial phase of negotiations will focus on their nine demands for reducing production costs, followed by discussions concerning the farmers in Thessaly affected by adverse weather conditions.

The farmers and livestock owners from Thessaly will seek specific answers from the government regarding compensation amounts, payment timelines, and the commencement of drainage works in flooded villages and fields.

The meeting with the Prime Minister is expected to occur either on Monday afternoon (February 12) or Tuesday morning (February 13).

However, a prerequisite for this crucial meeting is the uninterrupted flow of traffic on the roads, as the government has stated its refusal to engage in dialogue with blockades on national highways.

The government spokesperson also announced the Prime Minister’s intention to meet with a delegation of farmers.

The government maintains its openness to dialogue with farmers, provided that roadways remain accessible, as reiterated yesterday by Pavlos Marinakis.
