PM Tsipras expected to make announcement on snap elections (watch live)

PM is meeting with close aides

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras is expected to make an announcement on Thursday on whether he’ll call snap elections immediately, given that his government appears to lack a parliament majority at present. In the afternoon, the Greek PM met with his closest associates, and according to sources, he will announce elections, possibly for Sept. 13 or 20.

Tsipras appears determined to make his decision within the day, a decision influenced by other matters, like the confidence vote. The meeting includes both Cabinet and top party members. Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos arrived at Maximos Mansion at 11 am, while Interior and Administrative Reconstruction Minister Nikos Voutsis cut short his visit to Kalamata in the Peloponnese and returned to Athens.

If snap elections are called, then it would mark the … third time Greek voters head to the polls in 2015 (Jan. 25 general election and July 6 referendum), a “quarterly exercise” in democracy for the crisis-plagued and bailout-dependent country
