Guardian – Tourism: Greece’s growth is spectacular

"The British are leading the way", says Greek Tourism Minister Kikilias

Newsroom February 27 03:23

The British Guardian focuses on the spectacular recovery of the tourism sector in Greece, noting that in 2022 tourist traffic from the United Kingdom set a record, while in 2023 the presence of British holidaymakers in Greece is expected to be even stronger. As the publication points out, the number of British that visited Greece last season overtook that of the Germans – who were in first place for decades – while the tourism recovery of the country helped to grow the Greek economy after the pandemic by 5.6%.

Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias told the Guardian that the British, who are big spenders, are leading Greek tourism. “Yes, there may be an energy crisis, very high inflation, and a war in the heart of Europe with households being forced to save, but the data shows that Britons are not sacrificing their summer holidays,” said Mr. Kikilias.

For his part, the president of the Panhellenic Association of Hoteliers Grigoris Tassios points out that from the pre-bookings it appears that in 2023 traffic from Britain will be as good, if not better, compared to 2022, highlighting that at the World Travel Market international exhibition held last November in London, tour operators asked for more flights and more beds.

The Guardian also notes that in 2022 American travellers returned en masse to Greece. As it points out, Greece was among the most visited places on the planet in 2022, with the tourist season extending in the country, as it started in March and ended at the end of November.
