Handcuffs to a foreigner for two traffic scams in Evros

She played the role of “collector” in the fraudsters’ spiral

At noon on Tuesday, a foreigner who played the role of “collector” for a spiral of fraudsters who operated in Evros and had obtained large sums of money, gold pounds and jewelry from at least two elderly women, fell into the hands of the police of the Orestiada Security Department.

This had been preceded by a complaint from one of the victims, who had been called by an unknown man posing as a doctor, who had convinced her that her child had been seriously injured in a car accident and had asked her for a large sum of money, allegedly to undergo immediate surgery.

However, shortly after the money had been delivered, the elderly woman contacted her son, whereupon the fraud was discovered and the foreign ‘collector’ was traced by an organised operation thanks to her detailed description.

In her possession was found the amount of money she had received, which was returned to the victim.

From the preliminary investigation that followed, it was established that last Thursday the foreigner had received a sum of money, gold pounds and jewellery from another elderly woman in a settlement in Evros, which had been deceived by her accomplice under the same pretext.

A case was filed against her for setting up and participating in a criminal organisation and fraud involving her unknown accomplices and she was referred to the prosecutor of the Orestiada Prosecutor’s Office.

The preliminary investigation continues for the identification of her accomplices and the detection of any other similar cases, while the police officers of the Security requested the lifting of the confidentiality of communications for the two mobile phones seized in the possession of the perpetrator.
