Here’s how the world celebrated New Year’s Eve (photos + videos)

A worldwide cornucopia of festivities and fireworks!

Tens of thousands of people around the world celebrated the start of 2015 from Sydney to New York, from the River Thames to the Champs d’Elysee in Paris, from Hong Kong to Dubai.

Moscow’s Red Square was colored with a shimmering display of fireworks.

In Paris, fireworks framed the Champs d’Elysee in an avenue filled with partygoers.

Over 100,000 people in London had a coveted ticket to enjoy the huge 11-minute long light show over the Thames River.


The busy Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun) in Madrid was lined with thousands who braved the cold. True to the Spanish tradition, they ate six grapes as soon as the clock struck twelve in order to have 12 lucky months. It is estimated that around 2 million kilos of grapes were consumed in Spain on New Year’s Eve.

In Berlin, people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate to watch the dazzling fireworks. U.S. artist David Hasselhoff was present, 25 years after the symbolic concert held on December 31, 1989.

It is estimated that a million people gathered at Times Square in New York to watch the traditional drop of the New Year’s crystall ball. Another 200 million Americans from the U.S. watched the event on television.

Earlier, in Asia, in Tokyo, over 2,000 people let balloons fly into the sky with their wishes for 2015.


In Hong Kong, hundreds of thousands of people watched the fireworks show that lasted for eight minutes, lighting the city’s skyscrapers.

Beijing, bidding for the winter Olympics of 2022, held its celebrations at the Olympic park of the Chinese capital.

In Dubai, the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world that measures 828 meters was lit with fireworks.
