How Hellenic special army forces evacuated the Greek embassy in Libya

Under difficult conditions the Greek and foreign citizens boarded to the frigate “Salamis which rushed to remove them from the field of civil fighting in Libya, ” at the port of Tripoli.

According to reliable information, after sailing about 27 hours (650 nm) the “Salamis” sailed on the access port of Tripoli yesterday Thursday afternoon.

Immediately the special forces team which was on board, secured the adequate space around the harbor in order to settle there the embarkation station by staff of the frigate.

The frigate remained at a safe distance from the port and the boarding of citizens took place with inflatable boats of the Libyan Navy.

However, due to the large amount of waves, it was not possible to transfer all citizens to the rescue. Thus the transfer continued with two Libyan trailers.

Note that during all the routes from land to the frigate, the men of special forces were aboard on a specially equipped boat and accompanied the boats and tugs, while the frigate kept all the prescribed safety and preparedness measures for the protection of citizens and countering any threat. The operation also supported a helicopter and the team of management Underwater Demolition (IHR).

The operation was successfully completed in early ours this morning.

A total of 186 people are on board in the frigate of which 77 are from Greece (including the staff of the Greek Embassy), 12 from Cyprus, 78 from China, 10 from the United Kingdom, 7 from Belgium, one from Russia and one from Albania.

The frigate coming back to Greece to the port of Piraeus, where it is expected to dock on Saturday morning.

Today it was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the adverse security conditions prevailing in the region, have temporarily suspended the operation of the Greek embassy in Tripoli, Libya.
