Joe Wicks shares the most important factors for getting lean & ripped

“Everyday you make healthier choices and eat sensible portion sizes”

With over 3 million cookbooks sold and a spell as the nation’s PE teacher during covid lockdowns, it’s fair to say that Joe Wicks knows a thing or two about health and fitness.

Now, in an Instagram post, the polymath PT has revealed what it really takes to get lean and shredded, and by his reckoning training is the third and least important point on any weight-loss checklist.

‘If your goal is to change your body shape and lose some body fat,’ Wicks wrote, ‘then you have to be as committed and disciplined with your food as you are with your training. The training makes you feel great and causes adaptations in the body but it’s the food and sleep which really make the difference’.

According to Wicks, sleep and diet are the biggest contributing factors for weight loss, and the science backs him up. A review published in the journal Nutrients reported how people lost less fat if they slept for five-and-a-half hours compared with people who slept for eight-and-a-half hours.

‘Everyday you make healthier choices and eat sensible portion sizes,’ Wicks continued, ‘you are giving your body a chance to tap into stored body fat. That’s where the fat loss will come but it takes time and consistency.’

Wicks recently shared his goal for 2023, which, he revealed, remains the same as it was in 2022 (and probably 2021, 2020, 2019….): to get people moving.

‘Exercise for me is a stress release valve, and it helps me be a better husband, a better father and a better friend,’ Wicks wrote. ‘This is why I always encourage you to keep moving your body and keep cooking healthy food. It really is life changing and it’s not just about fat loss or looking lean.’
