Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Demography is a national problem, we have implemented 60 measures to support families

The Prime Minister announced new initiatives regarding support for young people to acquire housing

Newsroom May 23 12:19

Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the demographic problem as a national issue in a discussion held on Thursday morning as part of the “Demography 2024 – National Priority” conference. The Prime Minister presented the measures that the ND government has taken on the issue and announced new interventions after the European elections, particularly in relation to the acquisition of housing by young people as part of the support to have one or more children.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted that his government has implemented 60 policy measures to support families and increase the adult community in the labor market. He emphasized support for families to facilitate childbirth as the most important measure.

Mitsotakis mentioned specific steps taken, such as increasing the birth allowance introduced in 2019, with higher amounts for families with more children. He also pointed to policies aiding families with children and housing programs, describing the “My Home” program as particularly significant and a future focus area.

He proposed further support for families with one child struggling to have a second or those with two children aiming for a third. Possible incentives include support from companies and tax incentives for pediatric examinations.

He also stressed the importance of kindergartens and all-day schooling, both in the public and private sectors, emphasizing they should not be seen merely as childcare. Additionally, Mitsotakis indicated that more housing support initiatives would be introduced after the European elections.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the reform allowing pensioners to work without a reduction in their pension as an “important reform.” He noted that over 80,000 pensioners are currently benefiting from this policy, contributing to the state while remaining active and filling labor market gaps.

Social Security System

Mitsotakis mentioned that the social security system is currently remunerative. He also discussed efforts to create a more capitalized dimension with TEKA, a voluntary transition available for employees up to the age of 35.

Message to Young People

The PM aimed to reassure and encourage young people considering becoming parents, stressing various support measures and reforms in place to assist families.

In response to queries, Mitsotakis noted tax exemptions for returning Greeks but highlighted that improved working conditions due to changes in labor taxation are the primary reason for their return.

The PM underlined the incomparable joy of parenthood and pledged measures to support young couples affected by recent crises, aiming to ease the financial burden of raising children. Mitsotakis stressed the importance of policy planning aligned with demographic trends, considering factors such as future birth rates and educational needs.

Mitsotakis concluded by highlighting the significance of decentralization, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting regions and creating job opportunities outside Athens. He suggested that combining this with quality employment and services would make leaving Athens more appealing.
