Tensions between the members of SYRIZA’s hardline Left Platform and the more moderate pro-government faction are escalating with acrimonious public statements continuing. The outspoken leader of the Left Platform, Panagiotis Lafazanis, who has openly called for a return to a national currency and for the government to immediately abandon talks with EU institutions said the government ‘has failed miserably’, in an interview to left wing newspaper ‘Avgi’. “A government based on SYRIZA has no future, just like the country, if a third memorandum is imposed”, he said. Lafazanis added that the government will not avoid public outcry by resorting to ‘sneaky’ snap elections in September ‘out of guilt’.
