Libyan army claims that “Araevo” had Islamic militants on board

The company refutes the allegations

The case of the bombing of tanker “Araevo” of Greek company Aegean Shipping Enterprises Company, belonging to D. Melissanides, is turning out to be a veritable thriller. The bombing resulted in the deaths of two sailors, a Greek and a Romanian.

Representatives of the Libyan army told Reuters that the ship was carrying Islamic militants to Derna. The Libyan state oil company refutes allegations, stating that the ship was transferring fuel to industrial installations and that authorities had been notified. A Captain of the Libyan army stated that after warnings, the tanker entered a military zone, and after no replies to warnings received, the Libyan army bombed it twice.

The Libyan State Oil Company says that the tanker was carrying 13,000 tons of fuel and was attacked before it even made it to the port of Derna. The company did not comment on the Libyan Army’s allegations but underlined that the event will have negative consequences to fuel transport from and to Libyan ports.
