Literary Translation Prizes 2014 ceremony to be held on September 30

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at 19:00 at Goethe-Institut Athens

The Hellenic American Union, Goethe-Institut Athen, the Danish Institute in Athens and Instituto Cervantes de Atenas organize the 2014 Literary Translation Prizes 2014.

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at 19:00 at Goethe-Institut Athens (on the occasion of International Translation Day).

In the framework of their mission to foster cross-cultural understanding and encourage international cultural exchange, the four cultural institutes continue their joint support of the Literary Translation Prizes and the work of Greek translators.

The 2014 Literary Translation Prizes will be awarded to four translators for the best translation into Greek from English, German, Danish and Spanish respectively. The prizes are awarded to translations of novels, short stories, poetry and theatrical works that were published in 2013. Each winner will receive a cash prize.

Aa part of the ceremony, a panel discussion entitled: “The future and potential of literary translation” will take place as part of the ceremony. The discussion, which will be moderated by Manolis Biblis, journalist and editor in chief of Bibliodromio at “Ta Nea” newspaper, will feature: Antigoni Chatziandreou (Odysseas Publishers), Maria Papageorgiou (“Epi lexei” Bookshop) and Giannis Kalifatidis (translator).

The English-language Literary Translation Prizes shortlist for 2014 is:

Vassilis Athanasiadis for: A Winter Walk, The Maine Woods, A Week on the Concord & Merrimack Rivers, Journal by Henry David Thoreau (Kedros)
Dimitris Athinakis for: The Water Cure by Percival Everett (Polis)
Athina Dimitriadou for: The Lighthouse by Alison Moore (Ikaros)
