Meimarakis to serve as ND president until spring; same party election process

Grass roots election process eyed

A compromise has more-or-less been reached in terms of main opposition New Democracy’s leadership, with current interim president Vangelis Meimarakis expected to serve until the spring of 2016 until a party election.

However, the same election process will be employed, namely, election by the party’s grass roots.

Aides close to Meimarakis said the latter wanted to make his current leadership more in line with ND charter.
Speculation now focuses on whether he’ll contend for the top party spot heading into a party congress.

Meimarakis succeeded Antonis Samaras when the latter resigned earlier this month after a particularly lackluster term as main opposition leader after losing the January 2015 to Alexis Tsipras.
