Merkel’s enigmatic stand on Greece at G7

German Chancellor A. Merkel is trying to keep Greece away from the G7 spotlight

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told German newspaper Deutsche Welle that Greece is not the central issue of talks by the Group of 7 most industrialized nations (G7) in Bavaria. She said that the matter would only be touched upon. This comment follows statements made to the BBC that she isn’t losing sleep over a possible Brexit or Grexit. There is a general tendency on the part of Merkel to downplay the importance of the situation and marginalize it from other issues on the agenda, such as an effort to tackle climate change.

Her statement was made despite Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ warning to the G7 that time is running out for Greece in the hopes that Greece’s future would be a pressing concern for the G7 leaders.
