‘Moutzouris’ Diakofto-Kalavryta locomotive offers historic ride through history (video)

All aboard the DK 8001!

Visitors to the Diakofto-Kalavryta rack railway have a unique chance to experience a slice of living history while enjoying the lush beauty of the region thanks to the operation of the original DK 8001 steam locomotive – known as ‘Moutzouris’. The Hellenic Railway Organization (OSE) fully restored the steam engine and returned the historic locomotive to its base so that it can once again be put to work.

The locomotive was first put to work in 1896 during the government of Harilaos Trikoupis. It chugged over 22 kilometers from Diakofto through the Vouraikos Gorge all the way up to Kalavryta. A historic part of the country’s railway fleet, the train is back for a historic journey through time.
