Nikos Christodoulides is the new President of Cyprus after beating Andreas Mavroyiannis in the second round of the preliminary elections, according to official results.
Andreas Mavroyiannis already called Nikos Christodoulides and congratulated him on his win. He also announced that he will remain an active citizen but will not stay in active politics
With 100% of the votes counted, Christodoulides gathered 51.91% of the votes and Andreas Mavroyiannis 48.09% of the ballots.
Electoral experts note that the DISY voters seem to have ignored the party line indirectly given by the party president to overcome and support Andreas Mavroyiannis, instead opting to support Christodoulides.
According to the latest results, 75% of DISY voters voted for Nikos Christodoulides and 25% for Andreas Mavroyiannis.
In the Christodoulides staff, the celebrations had already begun with the first results of the exit polls.
