Obama nominates a Greek-American as Health Minister

Sylvia Mathews Burwell is the new Health Minister

US President Barack Obama has nominated Greek American Sylvia Matthews Burwell as the new Health Minister. Sylvia Mathews Burwell was director of the Office of Management and Budget and she will follow Kathleen Sebelius, who resigned after many Republican accusations regarding mismanagement of the website HealthCare.gov.

“Sylvia Matthews Burwell is a proven manager who has demonstrated her ability to create great teams, forge strong relationships, and deliver excellent results at the highest levels,” said President Obama.

Sylvia Mathews Burwell was born and raised in Hinton, West Virginia. She is the daughter of Cleo (née Maroudas) Mathews, a former Hinton mayor, and Dr. William Peter Mathews, a retired optometrist.
