Opposition party leaders in Greece heaped more criticism on the ruling radical leftist SYRIZA government over the weekend, as the latter was holding a “soul-searching” central committee meeting with opinions vacillating between “pain compromises” with creditors, to uncompromising “rift”.
Main opposition New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, who continues to flounder in recent opinion polls, slammed the radical leftists “inadequacy,” as he said, arriving on Crete to attend a party meeting.
He more-or-less repeated that his party is waiting to see a final deal with creditors, one that will come sooner rather than later.
Asked about Greek PM Alexis Tsipras’ address to party delegates on Sunday, opposition socialist leader and former minister Evangelos Venizelos acerbically responded that “after four months in office, Mr. Tsipras is turning to the Greek people and saying: ‘I’ve come to an understanding with the good Ms Merkel, but bad Mr. Schauble is ruining it for me’ — and there are some people that take this seriously. I think the scene describes the major problem of our country.”
Finally, centrist Potami party leader Stavros Theodorakis said his party – the “newest kid” on Greece’s political block – was willing to consider voting in favor of a deal with creditors when the SYRIZA government clinches one, and then sends it to parliament for approval.
“We are crystal clear: Other parties and certain politicians may bargain and debate, but we said from the onset that we’ll vote for this agreement. If (Greek PM Alexis) Tsipras and our partners agree on a text Potami will vote for this deal without conditions,” the one-time television investigative show presenter said.
