Panousisgate: SYRIZA’s silence concerning members links with terrorist groups

PM A. Tsipras did not appear in Greek Parliament to answer three questions submitted by MPs concerning claims by former minister Giannis Panousis regarding death threats and SYRIZA members’ negotiations with jailed terrorists

Time is running out for Supreme Court Prosecutor Efterpi Koutzamani who needs to decide what to do with the file presented to her by former citizens protection minister Giannis Panousis. The former minister’s claims that his life had been threatened by Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) members with links to jailed members of the terrorist group, Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, set a media avalanche of revelations regarding high-ranking members who negotiated with prisoners when compiling national legislation.

Panousis claims were countered by two ministers – Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos and Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Kostas – who also met with Koutzamani to point out the alarming consequences regarding the disclosure of public documents. They failed to mention names, but it was obvious that their complaint had to do with the former minister’s decision to go public with his case.

Speaking with private SKAI radio, Athens Law Association President Vasilis Alexandris, who is representing Panousis, said that the content of Panousis’ documents was serious and there is an operation currently taking place on the part of the government to downplay the severity of his accusations.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras avoided his appearance at Greek Parliament on Friday for his scheduled question time with MPs bearing in mind that there are three questions concerning the SYRIZA party’s links to jailed members of the terrorist group. Though Tsipras has returned from the European Council meeting in Malta he avoided appearing in Parliament to respond to the questions submitted by centrist Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis, conservative New Democracy Candidate Adonis Georgiadis and Independent Greeks (ANEL) MP Nikos Nikolopoulos.
