Levadia, the capital of Voiotia, is built between two hills and is very fertile thanks to the abundant water in the region. In antiquity, the area was known as Mideia, and it was the site of the famous Oracle of Zeus Trofonios. The region also played an important role in the Revolution of Greek Independence from 1821-1828. One of the most well known Greek folk songs has it that “Forty young men from Livadia march to take part in Tripolitsa’s siege…” which was the first organised war action against the Othoman rule during the national liberation war.
