Rimondi Fountain is located at the north end of Petychaki Square in the old town of Rethymnon. Venetian Governor J. Rimondi started the construction of the fountain in 1626, at the same site where an older fountain had existed since around 1588. Four small columns stand on raised basins – used as animal troughs – at the front of the Rimondi Fountain. When Rethymnon fell to the Turks in 1646, the fountain was walled in and domed over for a time, but the Turkish additions later fell into decay. Local legend states that whoever drinks from this fountain is destined to return and some day live in Rethymnon.
