You can buy just about anything at a kiosk! From chocolates to cigarettes and unusual items. Unfortunately, the economic crisis has caused many of them to close down. In Thessaloniki, only half of the 600 kiosks around the city remain. “The times when kiosks would make money are over,” said Apostolos Giannakopoulos, owner of the kiosk at Vas. Olgas Street, speaking with the Northern Greek daily, Macedonia. “Expenditure is greater than profit. Nowadays, it isn’t worth opening a kiosk. The capital needed to maintain it and ensure that it serves people’s basic needs is around 15,000 euros.”
