A distinguished politician died. At the Gates of Heaven, the great statesman met St. Peter who said: “Considering your importance in life, I’ll let you have a day in hell and one in heaven so that you can choose where you’d like to spend the rest of eternity…”
In hell, the politician met up with all his old friends, colleagues – even adversaries – enjoying games of golf. Dressed with the finest, and surrounded by Playboy bunnies offering drinks, they all looked like they’re having a great time. The 24 hours ended and the politician left with a heavy heart.
The next day, he entered heaven and spent a day playing the harp and jumping from cloud to cloud.
At the end of a day in hell, followed by that in heaven, St. Peter asked the great man: “What have you chosen? Heaven or hell?”
The politician said, “Look Saint Peter, heaven was great… but nothing beats hell!”
“Very well,” said Saint Peter, leading him back to the gates of hell. The politician was flung into a desert full of garbage. His friends were all there, dressed in rags, chased around by old, haggard nuns.
“What is this?!?” he complained “What about everything I saw the other day? This is nothing like I expected!”
Saint Peter responded: “YESTERDAY WAS THE PRE-ELECTION PERIOD… TODAY YOU VOTED!”
