Please sign! Greek American starts petition to name his son Spyridon

Let’s hope that the baby will be born a girl!

Greek American Nicholas Soukeras from Astoria, NY, is having monumental arguments with his wife Kseniya over what to name their firstborn son. At the moment, they don’t even know the baby’s gender, but Kseniya is against the name Spyridon. To convince her otherwise, Nicholas turned to the internet by starting an online petition.

The petition, titled “Godly Right to Name First-Born Son Spyridon” on ipetitions.com hopes to gather 100,000 signatures endorsing the name. As of Thursday morning there were 4,542 signatures. If he hits 100,000, Kseniya has agreed to accept the name, even though she prefers Michael, her father’s name.

Nicholas says that the situation has come between them and the name dispute is a sore spot in their relationship even before the baby is born. Kseniya says that Spyridon is “archaic, base, bereft of elegance and unsuitable for a child living in 21st century America.” On his part, Nicholas believes that the tradition of naming the firstborn son after the father’s grandfather is time-honored and should be respected. He says that the name is part of his heritage.
