Police closing in on Koumandareas killer

Police investigations are currently focusing on the video footage from security cameras in the area.

Following the release of the coroners report on Monday, which revealed that author Menis Koumandareas was strangled with bare hands, new clues have emerged that could help the police identify the perpetrator of this heinous crime.

The author was found dead in his apartment at the district of Kypseli on Saturday and the security cameras of the nearby shops as well as the traffic cameras could hold the key to the mystery of his murder. According to sources, Hellenic Police analysts are closing in on the killer, who was probably an acquaintance of the 83-year-old victim. Based on the clues found so far, the crime was not premeditated and the killing was committed in a heat of passion.

“If it was robbery, the offender would have been armed with a gun or knife. The fact that the victim was strangled points to the existence of personal enmity. Besides, there were no signs of breaking and entering and everything suggests that the killer knew the victim,” a police source told protothema.gr.

Police investigations are currently focusing on the video footage from security cameras in the area. The analysts are searching for suspects that seem to operate under stress or that show signs of panic. According to information, three suspects have been spotted and the police is currently trying to identify them.

The funeral of the writer will take place today at 14:00 at the First Cemetery of Athens. The Municipality of Athens will cover all the funeral expenses.
