Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed his win as one for Turkish “unity”, but it may also be a win for the Islamic state as opposed to a greater secular system

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hailed his party’s election victory as a vote for “unity and integrity” in Turkey. No sooner did theruling Justice and Development Party (AKP party) take back a majority in parliament that Erdogan focused on his priority, that is none other than a revision of the Turkish Constitution .

With almost all of the ballots counted early on Monday, Erdogan’s party won 49.4% of the vote, taking a majority of 316 seats.

Prior to gaining power, Erdogan made international headlines for statements concerning womens rights in Turkey, construction of a massive new presidential palace that dubbed him the title of “sultan” as well as arrests of journalists. There is worry that he intends to impose more Islamism on the secular Turkish political system.
