Australian public broadcaster Special Broadcasting Services (SBS) has come under criticism for its reality show “Go Back You Came From”, which takes ‘ordinary Australians’ to war-torn areas in the Middle East to retrace refugees’ journeys for putting the participants in harm’s way.

SBS has scheduled to air the first episode of the three-part series on Tuesday, where the participants will be exposed to the real experiences of refugee asylum seekers in Australia. The promotional material released showed people running to avoid real fire, accompanied by SBS audio that participants were ‘escorted under security to the Syrian front lines by Kurdish soldiers as they defend a village under threat by ISIS’.

SBS is a statement said the group was accompanied by a private security firm, but a the show’s consultant told newspaper ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ that the people should have been wearing helmets in addition to ballistic vests.
