Remains of sunken 3rd millennium settlement located off Argolida prefecture

Archaeologists believe settlement was walled and located on the coast at the time

Large-scale remains of a sunken 3rd millennium B.C. settlement have been located in the sea region near the Fragchthi cave off the coastal town of Kilada (Koilada), in southern Argolida prefecture.

The discovery is the result of research by the Terra Submersa mission and the solar-powered vessel Planet Solar, which is being conducted by the culture ministry’s underwater antiquities ephorate and the University of Geneva, under the aegis of the Swiss Archaeological School.

The research began in 2014 with the objective or trying to trace the earlier human activity in the eastern end of the Argolida Gulf, in the eastern Peloponnese.

The discovered remains are located at a depth of one to three meters and located over at least 12,000 square meters. It appears that the settlement was walled and located on the coast at the time.

A portion of the wall’s foundations have been located, along with pottery fragments — dated to roughly 2500 B.C. — along with stone tools, obsidian blades and other artifacts.

Underwater excavations will continued until the middle of the month.
