One person was killed and two others were injured this morning when a Russian missile hit buildings in the southern part of Kyiv, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitaly Klitschko said. “We have information about one dead and two injured” in the Holosiivs’kyi district in the southern part of the capital, he said in a Telegram message. For its part, the military command of Kyiv clarified that the losses were due to fragments of a shot-down missile.

Russia launched another airstrike in Ukraine during rush hour this morning and Ukrainian officials advised Ukrainians to rush to shelters as Ukrainian air defence forces shot down incoming missiles.

The Russian missile attack is ongoing and Ukraine has been targeted by “more than 30 Russian missiles,” a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force noted in statements made on public television.

“Six Tu-95s took off from the (Russian) Murmansk region and fired missiles. We are expecting more than 30 missiles” in total, “which have already started appearing in various areas. The anti-aircraft defence is working,” Yuri Ignat clarified, at a time when the media were already reporting on explosions in many Ukrainian regions and regional governors were announcing that the anti-aircraft defence had been put into operation.

The official noted that there is no information about drones. Kyiv officials noted that Ukrainian air defences shot down more than 15 missiles fired at the Ukrainian capital. “The enemy launched more than 15 cruise missiles in the direction of Kyiv. Thanks to the excellent work of our anti-aircraft defence, all targets were destroyed,” said the official of the Kyiv City Military Administration Serhiy Popko in a Telegram post. “However, the danger of airstrikes has not passed,” he added. “Remain in the shelters until the end of the alarm,” he emphasised.

The mayor of Kyiv also called on residents of the capital to stay in shelters after an explosion was heard following reports by Ukrainian officials of a Russian missile strike. “Explosion in Kyiv! Stay in the shelters,” Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

The representative of the Ukrainian air force also noted that there are strikes from Russian missiles in unspecified areas of the central Vinnytsia region and other parts of the country.

“In various areas and in the region of Vinnytsia in particular there are hits from Russian missiles,” noted Yuri Ignat in the statements he made on public television.

The governor of Vinnytsia confirmed the strikes in his area and noted that there are no casualties.

An air raid alert sounded across the country this morning as people went to work. In the capital, crowds of people took refuge in underground subway stations, where some sat on blankets and small plastic chairs.

Russia has been targeting critical infrastructure in Ukraine since October with missile and drone strikes, causing major blackouts in the country’s electricity, water and heating supplies.

Earlier, a Reuters reporter reported hearing the sound of a low-flying rocket about 30 kilometers from the capital, Kyiv.

Two missiles were also spotted over the Mykolayiv district, regional governor Vitaly Kim said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.
