A photo snapped by a Greek photojournalist during the devastating fires in Euboea in August, illustrating the horror experienced by the residents of the island on the desperate face of an 81-year-old woman, was one of the “best photos of the year”, according to Time magazine.
The photo, published in most major news networks, shows the black-clad 81-year-old Panagiota, outside her house, in Gouves, Euboea, holding her breast in despair with one hand and her bag with the other, while the flames approaching menacingly.
This shocking image was immortalised by Konstantinos Tsakalidis of the SOOC agency, on August 8.
The power of this photo was recognised by the leading American magazine Time, which made it a cover and included it in the list of “100 best photos of 2021”.
