A 4-year-old Syrian girl was found 300 meters from the Evros River at the Greek-Turkish border on Friday curled up next to her dead father, trying to shelter herself from the cold. The man, a Syrian national, died after making it across the river in difficult conditions. His young daughter remained by his side for around 10 hours before she was found by a farmer working in the region.

The police have determined that the 32-year-old man died of hypothermia due to the subzero temperatures in northern Greece. His daughter was transferred to hospital and then to the care of the Smile of the Child charity organization. She is unable to recount the events that caused her father’s death.

The young girl is suffering from shock while the search is on to locate her family.
