SYRIZA remembers Amygdaleza to house migrants in another U-turn in policy

The controversial Amygdaleza migrant detentian center, once described as a “concentration camp” by the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government. is now being recalled as a possible solution to the huge influx of migrants in Greece. The Tae Kwon Do stadium at Paleo Faliro is found to be an unsuitable lodging for migrants, even as a temporary solution. Heated episodes in the area have resulted in injuries causing the Alternate Migrant Policy Minister Ioannis Mouzalas to admit that deportations are unavoidable.

The stadium needs to be emptied by December 17 at the latest so that the damage caused by the migrants can be fixed in time for the International Kick Boxing Championships to take place there.

The Hockey stadium at Hellenikon has also been damaged after episodes by migrants from Morocco and the reaction of mayors from regions around the area pointing to the unsuitability of the use of these facilities as shelters.

There are currently 1,300 migrants at the Tae kwon Do stadium following the forced transfer of the migrants at Idomeni on the Greek border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

Greek daily newspaper Eleftheros Typos reports that the government is examining two options: The reopening of the facility at Amygdaleza and the reoperation of the migrant detention center at Corinth.

SYRIZA deputies are divided regarding this, however appear to have little choice bearing in mind the damage caused to other facilities where there have been attempts to house the migrants. The ultra-left ANTARSYA party and migrant solidarity groups are planning protest rallies in favor of migrants and the conditions in which they are held on December 18.
