SYRIZA made an unbelievable manoeuvre confronting the government and especially Evangelos Venizelos, who proposed the repeal of the bonus of 50 seats provided for the first party by the electoral law.

And indeed, it throws back with an impressive way the challenge of PASOK for this critical change.

The main opposition party states that it accepts the repeal of the bonus, but calls the government to resign immediately since today it governs thanks to this bonus, which in fact it is not entitled for it for another reason, too: it has come second in the preference of Greek society, based on the outcome of the elections !

“Our position is stable. We believe that there should be no seats bonus. If New Democracy and PASOK have changed their minds and say that there is no need to have a bonus for the first party, they have to put words into action: first, in order to bring this bill to the Parliament and second in order to resign because it has not popular legitimacy” said Dimitris Stratoulis, SYRIZA’s MP.

So, SYRIZA will move between two lines: first, it will never refuse to discuss a request that it constantly asks for. And, secondly, it will never discuss this issue on the basis of a temporary political expediency, but it will seek institutional guarantees that the new system will be integral proportional representation and will be established through a constitutional change.
