Tatiana Blatnik: The Odyssey of a princess from the hallows

The drama involving her missing brother, her divorce from Nikolaos, and her father's suicide when she was 7—that she discovered at 14

Newsroom June 4 09:49

In 2018, Richard Quest, the iconic CNN personality, journalist, and anchor, visited Athens. Known for his global travels and engaging conversations with interesting people, Quest came to Greece to report on the economic crisis, which was beginning to show signs of improvement. Among those he interviewed were Prince Nikolaos and Tatiana Blatnik, a high-profile couple at the time, who aimed to showcase the country’s new face to the American audience.

Quest enjoyed his time with Nikolaos and Tatiana, sampling moussaka, trying village salad, and even breaking plates in the street to honor local customs. Tatiana, who claimed to have cooked the traditional dishes Quest tried, aimed to dispel the untouchable stereotype associated with royalty. She emphasized her interest in practical activities and staying connected with the world, stating that she liked to “get her hands dirty.”

Six years later, despite their separation, Tatiana continues to engage actively with the world, albeit for a distressing reason. Recently, she launched an appeal on social media for information regarding her stepbrother, who has been missing since May 18.

53-year-old Atilio Brileburg, known as Ati, has been missing for 15 days, with no trace found by American authorities. Ati, a permanent resident of New York, was last seen on the West Coast, specifically in Malibu. As time passes, concerns about his well-being grow.

Ati is the son of Tatiana’s adoptive father, also named Attilio. This created some initial confusion during the search, as many thought the missing person was the family patriarch. Ati, who gained brief fame for his relationship with Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter, Kira, between 2009 and 2012, has since remained out of the spotlight.

Tatiana holds fragmented memories of her biological father, Ladislav Blatnik, who committed suicide when she was 7. Born in Slovenia, Ladislav emigrated to South America for business. His untimely death left a lasting impact on Tatiana and her older brother Boris. Tatiana learned about the true cause of her father’s death seven years later, during her teenage years.

Tatiana has expressed that the most painful aspect was not the loss itself, but the imposed silence surrounding the circumstances of her father’s death. “I lost my father when I was 7 years old; he committed suicide. Many people told me not to talk about my father’s death, to keep it to myself. The truth is that 800,000 people kill themselves every year; that’s one person every 30 seconds.”

Tatiana has always been sensitive and eager to help others. As a child, she shared what she had, collected donations, and spent her pocket money on candy for less fortunate children. She lived in Venezuela until age 3, then moved to Switzerland for school at Aiglon, later studying Sociology at Georgetown University in the USA, and finally moving to London. Her mother found lasting love with Attilio Brileburg during this time.

Tatiana’s lineage, connected to King George I of England on her mother’s side, placed her within the international jet set, shaping her brief professional career. In the mid-2000s, she worked for Diane Von Furstenberg.

Her professional life was short-lived due to her romance with Prince Nikolaos, which began in 2003. By 2004, they were together at major events like the Greek national football team’s triumph in Lisbon and the Athens Olympics. Nikolaos proposed in 2009 with a sapphire from his grandmother, Queen Frederica. Tatiana was baptized Orthodox in June 2010, and they married on August 25, 2010, in Spetses. Despite her half-brother’s ongoing search, Tatiana remains active as an ambassador for Greece, recently sharing tips in a Robb Report article celebrating Athens.
