Taxpayers line up for ENFIA objections and exemptions

Huge lines in a frantic rush to collect documents required for ENFIA exemptions

The application of the new uniform Single Property Ownership Tax (ENFIA) to replace the previous Property Tax (FAP) was marked with errors and miscalculations. Huge lines were noted outside tax offices yesterday. People also queued up at insurance funds in order to request the relevant justifications needed for people interested in receiving an exemption from ENFIA.

The Finance Ministry’s circular on ENFIA ameliorations and adjustments will be issued within two weeks so many people are in danger of not making the deadline to receive exemptions and will be forced to pay the first installment on August 29. Furthermore, the Finance Ministry already possesses the data to ascertain exempt groups and could have refrained from releasing charges for these people rather than requiring taxpayers to gather clearances and other justifications in order to seek exemptions.

An estimated one million taxpayers will need to gather papers for a 50-100% reduction from the ENFIA tax. In order to do so they will need to collect details of their earnings, their family size and details about the size of the property they live on.
