Komotini pupils complain over lack of heating

Komotini parents say cutbacks reason for no heat in pupils’ classroom

Parents of pupils at the 11th primary school of Komotini, in NE Greece, have aired their complaints over a lack of heating at the school, going so far as to send a letter of protest to the education ministry.

“We are complaining against the unacceptable conditions at the 11th primary school of Komotini where our children are studying.

Throughout winter there was no proper heating system and as a result our children had classes while wearing their coats, causing them to get sick regularly. The vice-mayor for schools is allegedly ordering for costs to be cut to save heating fuel. Of course, this is not being done at all schools and is discriminatory for our school. These orders of course don’t apply to his office where he walks around with a shirt. The school has electric heaters but not for the children. If the problem is not fixed immediately, we will need to take recourse with the prosecutor and sue every person responsible. We would like a price comparison with every school. We are further seeking for the Ministry of Education to take action and seek explanations and remand those responsible. Don’t wait for our vote. Our children are complaining daily about the freezing cold study halls.

We will not allow this to continue. Let those responsible switch off the heating in their offices first and then turn to the halls where our children study.”
