Varoufakis: I will not join new Lafazanis party

I could be part of a Tsipras government

In yet another interview to media, former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis clarifies that he will not back the newly created political group of ‘Popular Unity’ formed by a former comrade of his, Panayiotis Lafazanis. Speaking to German newspaper ‘Die Welt’, the ‘radical Marxist’ said that the political gap between his views and those of the new political group was too wide for a possible collaboration. ‘I like them, and I believe they like me too, but the political distance than divides us is too big. It would not be a logical combinantion’, underlined Varoufakis. He stressed that it would be better for Greece to remain within the Eurozone, but not at all costs. On the prospect of his participating in a new government under the leadership of current PM Alexis Tsipras, he replied ‘Never say never’. Varoufakis said he continues to have good relationships with Tsipras and other SYRIZA members. Finally, he repeated his view that Greece will not be able to repay the loans, as both IMF Chief Christine Lagarde and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble well know, he claimed.
