World Family Day: Young Greeks not willing to get hitched

Youth unemployment and the financial crisis have resulted in extended adolescence with less Greek youths willing to leave their parents homes to start families of their own

May 15, International Day of Families, shows that the economic crisis in Greece has taken its toll on families with the high rate of unemployment causing people to delay marriage and having children. Studies show that an increasing number of Greeks aged from 25-35 years of age are choosing to continue living with their parents as a result in unemployment.

Youth unemployment has had a domino effect on the real estate market, while psychologists ponder the consequences of delayed adulthood as young people delay taking the step away from their family home.

The statistics show a reluctance in young people to wed. 18,086 marriages by people from the ages of 25-20 in 2005 dropped to 10,873 in 2013.
