World premiere of documentary “Greeks of the sea” at the Hellenic Maritime Museum

The purpose of the series is to enquire beyond the present crisis and to highlight the positive aspects of Greece

On Tuesday, 1st July 2014, a special screening/preview of the 3-hour TV documentary “Greeks of the Sea” took place at the Hellenic Maritime Museum, Piraeus, Greece, a few days before the official premiere in Australia and other countries abroad.

The event was attended by H.E. the Ambassadress of Australia in Greece, Mrs. Jenny Bloomfield, the Mayor of Oinoussai Islands, Mr. Evangelos El. Angelakos, the President of the Hellenic Maritime Museum, Mrs. Anastasia Anagnostopoulou-Paloumpi, father Thomas Synodinos, the President of the Greek Union of Retired Mariners of Merchant Shipping Captain Makis Daskalakis, and many of the people who helped in organizing and creating this documentary for Greece and the Isles of Oinousses.

The producers, Phil Kiely and Peter Pentz, along with the director of the documentary, Tom Nicol, thanked all the attendees for their help to film in over than 25 Greek islands, onboard cargo and passenger ships, fishing boats, yachts etc. A special reference was made to the contribution of our Mayor, Mr. Angelakos, to their work.

The purpose of the series is to enquire beyond the present crisis and to highlight the positive aspects of Greece, and especially, to point out the distinct bonds of Greeks with the sea; the Greeks who live by the sea, with the sea, for the sea.

The first of the three one-hour episodes of the series will be shown in Australia by the public TV channel SBS ONE on Saturday, 19/07/2014, 19:30 local time. The next two will follow on Saturday, 26th July, and Saturday, 2nd August.
