The first wreck was noted on Thursday night, just after 11 p.m. when the Greek Coast Guard was notified that a wooden boat with many migrants had overturned. Four Greek coast guard vessels, one from Frontex, a Super Puma helicopter and three fishing boats moved to the region so as to rescue 138 refugees.

Meanwhile, another incident took place north of Rhodes at dawn on Friday. Three people were pulled from the sea and another six were saved. Three people are still missing.

Wind velocity in the region is currently at 5 Beaufort, hampering rescue efforts.
