8.4-square-meter underground vault found at Amphipolis

A second, well preserved marble door leaf, sized 2Χ0.90Χ0.15 m. and weighing about one tonne was found inside the trench

According to an announcement that was released on Friday by the Ministry of Culture on the progress of the excavation works at Amphipolis, an artificial trench was found in the shale floor which is filled with silty sand (just like the rest of the monument’s backfill), during the soil removal process in the fourth compartment of the tomb.

The Culture Ministry’s announcement also mentioned that a second, well preserved marble door leaf, sized 2Χ0.90Χ0.15 m. and weighing about one tonne was found inside the trench.

The removal of the door leaf from the excavation site will take place today.

The excavation has progressed to a depth of about 1.40 m. from the surface of the threshold.
